Description of location :
The site occupies land of the Khachig brigade in Bayantes sum, Zavkhan province. The area belongs to the Mongolian and Russian national border area in the land of Tuva. It is located on the western shoreline of the Kachigiin River which cuts through a valley, that has an abundant mix of cedar trees, spruce trees, black woods and brushwood and reaches a confluence with the Tesiin Gol in the west. The Kachigiin River arises from the eastern side. To the west of the monastery site is a mountain range Ikh Jargalantiin Uuls. To the northwest is another mountain range called Baga Jargalantiin Uuls. These two mountain ranges are almost barren and have mossy vegetation. To the east of the monastery site is a mountain named Bayan-Owoo which has an owoo built on its arête. The previous monastery base is located at the mouth of a river Baga Jargalant Gol that comes from the northwest and drains into Khachigiin River. In front of the monastery base is an even grass valley which extends to a river Tesiin Gol. The local herders move around the area to use the vast pastoral resource during all four seasons. The bases of the Khachigiin Khuree monastery’s bases remain in noticeable condition. Surrounding the area, roughly measured, is about 700 x 700 m. Our team estimates that the monastery site consisted of 3 temples. The biggest temple, the 1st from the southwest, lay horizontally and it measures 17 x 17 m. This probably was the main Tsogchen Dugana. To the east of Tosgchen Dugana are 2 adjacent temple bases measuring 10 x 14 m.and 10 x 16 m.. It looks like one had 2 rooms or they were two adjoined buildings. The last temple base is clearly visible, measuring 8 x 8.6 m. and its door faces southwest. To the north of the monastery base is a fence-like structure that measures 15 x 18 m. and at the northwest of this structure is another fence measuring 18 x 29 m. To the northwest, towards the top of Baga Jargalant Am are 2 streams of ger bases still visible, possibly of monastery monks. Also on the monastery site are pieces of rotten wood, wooden floor remnants, a small number of broken pieces and a stump.

Notes :
1. The locals call it “Khachigiin Khuree” or “Khachigiin Khureenii Tuv /Tav”. In B. Rinchen’s registration, it was noted with the name “Khachigiin Monastery”.
11. The locals have been told by the seniors that “Khachigiin Temple / Khiid/” disappeared after the purge, roughly estimated around 1940.
13. No one was sure if the monks had resided at the monastery or if they had their own dwelling area. About 10 km. from the Khachigiin Monastery is a post which administers the Khachigiin area that merges with the Mongol and Tuvan border.
